Wael Ghoneim

Wael Ghoneim (center, in navy polo) addresses the crowds in Midan el Tahrir.

Wael Ghoneim, the Google’s Head of Marketing for North African and the Middle East, who had started the influential Facebook page, ‘We are Khalid Said’, to honour an Egyptian civilian who had been beaten to death by police last year, was released from custody yesterday. Needless to say, his arrest was a denial of his basic civil liberties and human rights. He is alive and well, despite wide-spread fears of torture and/or death. After his release he tweeted: “Freedom is a blessing that deserves fighting for it.”

Ghoneim is a hero, not matter what he says. He started a public Facebook page and despite being held in prison for the two weeks, he has come out still believing and fighting for his country and for his countrymen’s rights. He is an example of why these protests should not end, why they are so important to the Egyptian people and to Egypt as a whole.

Watch the interview; it is quite moving.
